Hogg's Weekly Instructor
Includes 5 Volumes 1847 - 1852
Published by James Hogg: Edinburgh 1847 - 1852

"Hogg's Weekly Instructor was a substantial mid-nineteenth century literary and educational periodical issued in Edinburgh between 1847 and 1852 under the imprint of James Hogg. Intended for the improving reader, it brought together essays, moral reflections, fiction, biography, travel writing and instructive articles within a format that balanced entertainment with intellectual cultivation. Published during the height of the Victorian appetite for serial literature, the work reflects the era's belief in self-education, moral progress and the widening availability of printed knowledge to an expanding middle-class readership.

The contents range widely in subject and tone, encompassing reflective pieces such as "Ideas About Man," narrative serials, historical sketches, social commentary and instructive prose designed to inform as well as edify. The periodical format encouraged sustained engagement, with longer tales unfolding across issues and thoughtful essays addressing religion, philosophy, society and character. Written in the measured and earnest voice characteristic of early Victorian prose, the publication offers a vivid insight into contemporary thought, literary taste and the moral frameworks that shaped British culture in the years preceding the great industrial and imperial expansions of the later century.

This five-volume collection, covering the years 1847 to 1852, stands as an impressive survival of a substantial Scottish literary venture. Handsomely bound in period leather with gilt tooling, the set embodies both the durability and dignity associated with Victorian publishing. As a primary source of mid-nineteenth century literary culture, it will appeal to collectors of early Victorian periodicals, scholars of Scottish publishing history, and readers interested in the moral and intellectual climate of Britain in the 1840s and 1850s.
