" Masterman Ready; or, The Wreck of the "Pacific" is Captain Frederick Marryat's classic tale of shipwreck, survival and adventure, originally published in the early 1840s. When the Pacific is overwhelmed during an Atlantic storm, the Seagrave family and veteran sailor Masterman Ready escape to an apparently uninhabited island. Under Ready's experienced guidance, the survivors must secure food and shelter, protect themselves from danger and establish a workable new life far from civilisation.

Written for younger readers but retaining Marryat's authentic nautical knowledge, the story combines seafaring action with practical details of island survival, resourcefulness and cooperation. Masterman Ready is the book's steadfast central figure: a brave, capable and deeply religious old sailor whose seamanship and sound judgement sustain the stranded family through hardship. The novel became one of the most enduring nineteenth-century Robinsonade adventures and remains an engaging example of classic British juvenile fiction.

Published by Juvenile Productions Ltd of London circa 1945 as part of its fifteen-volume "Merlin" series, this attractive undated edition is bound in bright red cloth with black titles and ruling. It includes a full-colour frontispiece, "Leaving the Ship," repeated as the dramatic artwork upon the scarce original pictorial dustjacket. The jacket survives with chipping and associated edge wear, while an original label from The Book Shop at the Myer Emporium Ltd provides appealing Australian retail provenance."
