Walt Disney's Dopey - He Don't Talk None!
Published by Ayers & James Pty Ltd: Sydney c1938
Early & Scarce Australian Disney Publication In Original Pictorial Covers
"
Walt Disney's Dopey - He Don't Talk None! is a charming and now scarce Australian Disney children's publication featuring Dopey, the much-loved youngest dwarf from Walt Disney's landmark animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Published in Sydney by Ayers & James Pty Ltd and printed by Photogravures Pty Ltd, this early Australian Disney production dates from around the late 1930s, placing it close to the extraordinary international success of Snow White, which premiered in 1937. The book retains its striking original pictorial covers, dominated by a large full-colour image of Dopey and the wonderfully period title "He Don't Talk None!"
Rather than simply retelling Snow White, the book gives Dopey an adventure of his own. Beginning at the end of a day in the dwarfs' mine, the story follows the silent and mischievous little dwarf through a succession of comic episodes. His good-natured attempts to help rarely proceed according to plan: he encounters woodland animals, creates havoc at home, blows bubbles from his ears, takes to the drums and becomes involved in the familiar slapstick misadventures that made the character such an audience favourite.
Particularly appealing are the numerous large colour illustrations, many occupying almost an entire page and presenting Dopey and the other dwarfs in the soft, richly coloured style associated with Disney publishing of the period. The illustrations capture Dopey mining, marching through the forest, playing music and causing domestic chaos, while appearances by other familiar dwarfs firmly connect the book with the world of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The combination of relatively little text and abundant colour artwork gives the publication the appearance and immediacy of an early Disney picture book.
Of particular interest to Australian Disney collectors is the book's Sydney imprint, with the final page recording that it was printed for publishers Ayers & James Pty Ltd by Photogravures Pty Ltd. Early Australian editions of Disney material were comparatively ephemeral productions intended for young readers, and their thin pictorial bindings made them particularly vulnerable to heavy use and eventual disposal. Surviving examples retaining their original covers therefore have considerable appeal. An early and scarce Australian Disney publication, combining desirable pre-war Disney imagery, a particularly attractive Dopey cover and strong crossover interest for collectors of Disneyana, Australian children's books and early illustrated juvenile publications."
