The Bankruptcy Of Evolution
By Harold C. Morton
Published by Marshall Brothers Limited: London c1932 3rd Edition
Ex Keswick Library - Last Date 03/03/1947

"The Bankruptcy of Evolution is a vigorous early twentieth-century critique of evolutionary theory written by the Reverend Harold C. Morton, who sought to defend a traditional Christian understanding of creation against what he regarded as the speculative assumptions of modern science. Written for a general readership, the book examines the scientific and philosophical arguments surrounding evolution, challenging the idea that life and humanity could be adequately explained through purely natural processes. Morton's work reflects the lively debates that characterised the relationship between science and religion during the period.

Drawing upon contemporary scientific literature, biblical interpretation, and philosophical reasoning, Morton argues that the complexity, order, and purpose evident in the natural world point towards divine design rather than accidental development. While many of the scientific discussions have since been overtaken by later discoveries, the book remains an interesting historical document illustrating how religious scholars and Christian apologists responded to the growing acceptance of Darwinian evolution in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This Third Edition is made particularly appealing by its provenance from the Keswick Lending Library for Christians in Melbourne, retaining both the original library promotional leaflet and borrowing card. The card records numerous loans over more than a decade, with the final recorded borrowing dated 3 March 1947, providing a tangible connection to the book's active use within Melbourne's Christian community. As such, the volume represents not only a theological work but also a fascinating piece of Australian religious and library history."
