Although undated on the title page, Irving's author's note is dated 7 May 1919, firmly placing publication around that year. The volume contains 31 poems, many of which Irving states had previously appeared in Australian and New Zealand newspapers, including Melbourne's Argus and Herald, the New Zealand Times and the Poverty Bay Herald. The collection is enhanced by a colour frontispiece and decorative typographical elements.\n        \u003cdiv\u003e\n         \u003cbr\u003e\n        \u003c\/div\u003e\n        \u003cdiv\u003e\n         Irving's poems range widely across faith, nature, romance, travel and reflections upon contemporary life, but the collection has particularly interesting maritime, imperial and First World War-era associations. Titles include Outposts of Empire, A \"Dog Watch\" off Cape Horn, Outward Bound, \"Blighters\" off \"Blighty\" and Pioneers.\n         \u003cstrong\u003e\n          Of particular historical interest is \"The Wreck of the Titanic\", a poetic treatment of the 1912 disaster published only seven years after the sinking.\n         \u003c\/strong\u003e\n         Together these pieces place the book firmly within the literary and social atmosphere of Australia and the wider British world immediately following the Great War.\n        \u003c\/div\u003e\n        \u003cdiv\u003e\n         \u003cbr\u003e\n        \u003c\/div\u003e\n        \u003cdiv\u003e\n         Printed entirely in Australia by Gibbs, Cryer \u0026amp; Co., 443 Kent Street, Sydney, Growing Pains is a distinctly local production and an interesting example of privately or independently issued Australian poetry of the period. Irving appears to have left a comparatively modest published footprint, adding interest to surviving copies of this work.
