"With Frederick the Great is one of G.A. Henty's classic historical adventure novels, set against the backdrop of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), often regarded as the first truly global conflict. The story follows young Englishman Charlie Prendergast, who leaves Britain to seek his fortune in Europe and eventually enters the service of the renowned Prussian king, Frederick the Great. Through Charlie's experiences, Henty introduces readers to the major campaigns, battles, and personalities of the war, blending historical fact with fast-paced fiction in his characteristic style.
As Charlie rises through the ranks and earns the confidence of Frederick's officers, he finds himself involved in espionage, military action, daring escapes, and diplomatic intrigue. The novel provides vivid descriptions of famous engagements such as Rossbach, Leuthen, and Kunersdorf, while also exploring the discipline, courage, and hardships faced by soldiers during eighteenth-century warfare. Henty's narrative places the reader at the heart of the conflict, offering both excitement and an accessible introduction to one of Europe's most significant military struggles.
First published in the late nineteenth century and illustrated in this edition by Wal Paget, With Frederick the Great remains one of Henty's most popular works. The present Blackie & Son edition, issued around 1915, is particularly appealing in its striking decorated cloth binding and retains all eight full-page illustrations and eight maps as called for. Adding further historical interest is the contemporary Sunday School prize plate dated 28 November 1915 from Oakleigh, Victoria, providing a charming glimpse into the book's early Australian ownership and use as an educational reward during the First World War."
