"George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), known professionally as Bernard Shaw, was a towering figure in modern literature and drama. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he moved to London in 1876 and embarked on a rigorous self-education that shaped his career as a playwright, critic, and political thinker. Shaw wrote over sixty plays, blending satire, social critique, and philosophical inquiry. His works—such as Man and Superman, Major Barbara, Saint Joan, and Pygmalion—challenged Victorian norms and introduced a new realism to English-language theatre. In 1925, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his contributions to drama and letters, and in 1938, he won an Academy Award for the screenplay adaptation of Pygmalion.

Beyond the stage, Shaw was a passionate political activist and a leading voice in the Fabian Society, advocating for democratic socialism and gradual reform. He was known for his sharp wit, contrarian views, and fearless engagement with controversial topics, including eugenics, organized religion, and British imperial policy. Though often provocative, his intellectual rigor and moral conviction earned him lasting respect. Shaw refused all state honors, including the Order of Merit, and remained prolific until his death at age 94. His legacy endures not only through his plays but also through the term "Shavian," which encapsulates his distinctive blend of humor, critique, and idealism."
