The Poetical Works Of Robert Burns
With Glossary, Notes, Memoir etc
The "Albion" Edition
Published by Frederick Warne And Co: London c1910 (undated)
In Presentation Bindings With Gleaming Bright Gilt Edged Text Block

" The Poetical Works of Robert Burns, issued as part of Frederick Warne & Co.'s attractive "Albion" Edition, brings together the poetry of Scotland's great national poet in a substantial single volume. Published in London and New York around 1910, the work is enhanced by a glossary, explanatory notes and a biographical memoir, together with an engraved portrait frontispiece of Burns. The supporting material makes the volume particularly useful for Burns's extensive use of Scots vocabulary and places his poetry within the circumstances of his remarkable but comparatively short life.

Robert Burns (1759-1796) remains one of the most celebrated poets in the English-speaking world and an enduring symbol of Scottish literary and cultural identity. Drawing upon rural life, love, friendship, politics, humour and the Scottish landscape, his writing combined traditional Scots language and song with an extraordinary ability to capture universal human experience. The collection includes the poetry for which Burns became famous, representing the body of work that gave the world such enduring pieces as Auld Lang Syne, To a Mouse, Tam o' Shanter and The Cotter's Saturday Night.

The Albion Edition was produced as an appealing collected edition for the late Victorian and Edwardian book market, combining Burns's verse with the reference material necessary to understand its language and historical setting. This copy retains its tissue-guarded portrait of Burns and presents the poems in a generous, highly readable format, with explanatory footnotes accompanying the Scots vocabulary throughout. It is an attractive period edition of an author whose influence extended far beyond Scotland and whose work became particularly cherished throughout Britain and the wider Commonwealth.

Of particular appeal is this copy's handsome presentation-style binding, finished in rich burgundy leather with gilt "Burns" lettering to both front board and spine, gilt ruling around the boards and decorative gilt tooling along the inner edges. Most striking is the gleaming bright gilt-edged text block, which remains exceptionally vivid and gives the closed volume a particularly luxurious appearance. The patterned endpapers further enhance the presentation, while the exterior shows honest age-related wear, including some loss at the head of the spine. A characterful and highly decorative early twentieth-century Burns, combining literary importance with the visual appeal of a traditional presentation-bound volume.
