Original Decorated Cloth Bindings - All 5 Illustrations + 6 Maps Present As Called For

"With Clive In India; Or, The Beginnings of an Empire is one of G. A. Henty's best-known historical adventure novels, first published in 1884 and here represented by an attractive early twentieth-century Blackie & Son edition in original pictorial cloth. Set against the dramatic events surrounding the rise of British influence in eighteenth-century India, the story follows the fortunes of young Charlie Marryat, whose adventures become closely intertwined with the career of Robert Clive. Blending authentic historical events with fictional characters, Henty sought to bring history vividly to life for younger readers while maintaining a strong emphasis on courage, loyalty and perseverance.

Drawing upon contemporary histories and eyewitness accounts, Henty recreates the struggles between British and French interests in India and the turbulent campaigns that culminated in Clive's victories at Arcot and Plassey. The author himself notes in the preface that the historical details have been carefully researched and that many of the events described were so remarkable that "no fiction could surpass them". Rich in battles, sea voyages and military exploits, the narrative offers an engaging account of the foundation of British power in India and remains one of the most enduring examples of Victorian juvenile historical fiction.

Published by Blackie & Son Limited of London and Glasgow, this handsome edition is illustrated throughout and retains all five full-page illustrations together with the complete suite of six maps as called for. Bound in striking original decorated cloth featuring a colourful Indian figure design to the upper cover and spine, the volume exemplifies the quality and appeal of Blackie's Edwardian gift books. A classic work by one of the most celebrated writers of boys' adventure fiction, combining exciting storytelling with a fascinating historical backdrop."
