Best known for The Mysteries of Paris, Sue pioneered the urban mystery novel, weaving tales of crime, poverty, social injustice and aristocratic intrigue that influenced later writers including Dickens and Victor Hugo. This attractive "Edition de Luxe" was issued by subscription only and formed part of an ambitious twenty-volume collected works series published in Boston and New York at the close of the Victorian era.

This six-volume grouping contains Arthur, Pride, The Knight of Malta and Envy, and the complete three-volume Mysteries of Paris, one of the nineteenth century's most influential and widely read novels. First published in serial form between 1842 and 1843, The Mysteries of Paris follows the enigmatic Prince Rodolphe as he journeys through the darkest quarters of Paris, encountering thieves, outcasts and victims of society while exposing corruption and injustice. The accompanying works similarly blend romance, adventure and moral allegory, reflecting Sue's enduring fascination with social reform and the complexities of human character.

Published by Brainard Publisher and carrying a copyright date of 1899, this "Edition de Luxe" was printed exclusively for subscribers and limited to just one thousand numbered sets, with the present example being an unnumbered or uncompleted subscriber entry. Of additional interest is the provenance, with the bookplate of Hugh D.
