" The Way To The Palace; or, Sermons On The Walls by John Tillotson is an unusual late Victorian juvenile work combining travel, observation and Christian moral instruction. Taking as its framework a journey towards London's celebrated Crystal Palace at Sydenham, Tillotson draws lessons from the commonplace notices and signs encountered along the road. Rather than presenting conventional sermons, he transforms familiar phrases such as "Boys! Drive With Caution", "No Admittance, Except on Business", "Push", "Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted", "Beware of the Dog" and "No Lamps" into accessible moral and religious reflections intended particularly for younger readers.

The book is illustrated throughout, with engravings depicting the journey, street scenes, signs and incidents upon which Tillotson bases his observations. The opening provides a particularly evocative contemporary description of travelling towards the Crystal Palace, described as the great "bright sparkling Diamond" upon Penge Hill. Each successive sign becomes the starting point for a short sermon concerned with such themes as conduct, temptation, responsibility, perseverance and Christian faith. The result is an interesting example of Victorian religious publishing in which everyday urban and suburban life was employed to make moral instruction immediate and memorable for a juvenile readership.

Published by Ward, Lock & Co. of London, the volume is undated, although an ownership inscription dated April 1889 provides firm evidence that this copy was already in circulation by that date and supports a publication date of circa 1889 or earlier. It remains in its particularly attractive original decorated brown cloth bindings, extensively blind-stamped with floral and pictorial decoration and featuring a prominent gilt title panel to the front board. With its combination of Victorian juvenile literature, religious instruction, period illustration and references to the now-lost Crystal Palace, this is a distinctive surviving example of late nineteenth-century popular publishing."

Light wear and fading to covers and spine as shown. Inside hinges split and covers wobbly but secure. Pages slightly age toned otherwise clean. No loose pages. A lovely, inscribed copy in good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
