In Original Cloth Bindings With Contemporary Inscription

" Joseph Allen's Life of Nelson presents a compact nineteenth-century biography of Admiral Horatio Nelson, tracing his naval career from his early service through the campaigns and victories that established him as Britain's most celebrated naval commander. Allen places particular emphasis on Nelson's leadership, personal courage and devotion to duty, culminating in his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and the extraordinary public commemoration that followed.

The work reflects the strongly patriotic tone typical of Victorian biographies of Nelson, treating him not merely as a successful admiral but as a model of national character and service. The closing pages discuss monuments raised in his memory, including the Guildhall memorial, and reproduce a lengthy commemorative inscription celebrating his achievements and reputation. A portrait frontispiece of Nelson faces the title page.

This undated George Routledge and Sons edition, dating to around 1880, is particularly attractive in its original decorated cloth binding, with elaborate blue, green and gilt floral ornamentation and gilt title panel to the upper board. It also retains a contemporary ownership inscription dated May 24, 1886, reading "Richard Potter, Simmons Reef, Blackwood," adding a pleasing element of period provenance to the volume."

General wear, fading and a few bumps to covers with some damage to top of outer spine as shown. Binding is decent with no loose pages. The odd age spot present with the vast majority of pages being clean and well presented. A nice complete copy retaining its original bindings. Please study photos to further understand condition.
