Set in a picturesque coastal district of western England, the story follows the young Gilbert West and uses his adventures and discovery of a supposed treasure as the framework for a characteristic nineteenth-century story of childhood, temptation and moral development.

Gilbert's search leads him amongst the beaches, rocks and working people of the coastal community, with his experiences gradually providing lessons concerning industry, honesty, responsibility and the consequences of idleness. Although clearly written with the moral and religious objectives of the Sunday School movement in mind, the narrative is presented as an adventure story rather than simply a collection of lessons. The volume is illustrated throughout, including a frontispiece and full-page engravings such as Gilbert Begs the Loan of the Axe, together with numerous smaller illustrations incorporated into the text.

An especially attractive example of Victorian juvenile publishing, the book remains in its original vivid blue cloth bindings, elaborately decorated in black with gilt title panels to both the upper board and spine. The volume is undated, although the presentation inscription — "To Frederick Singleton from his Sabbath-school Teacher 9/7/76" — establishes that this copy was already in circulation by 1876, providing useful contemporary provenance and making a date of c.1876 or earlier appropriate. The combination of its decorative binding, illustrations, coastal adventure subject and surviving Sabbath-school presentation inscription gives the volume considerable period character."

Light wear and fading with a few marks to covers and spine as shown.
