"
This remarkable eight-volume collection of The Annual Register: A Review of Public Events at Home and Abroad spans the years 1876 to 1894, published contemporaneously between 1877 and 1895 by Rivingtons and Longmans, Green & Co. Each first edition volume provides a meticulous yearly chronicle of British political affairs, imperial developments, scientific advances, and cultural milestones, alongside detailed reports from across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Renowned for its accuracy and breadth, The Annual Register was one of the Victorian era's most respected reference works, offering contemporary readers an authoritative digest of world events, parliamentary debates, and social changes within the expanding British Empire.
Beyond its factual reporting, the series captures the intellectual and moral tone of late nineteenth-century Britain, documenting transitions in diplomacy, colonial administration, and industrial progress with a tone of sober observation. These particular years encompass significant moments such as the Eastern Question and Russo-Turkish War, the rise of European colonial rivalries, the Anglo-Zulu War, and shifting political balances under Disraeli and Gladstone. Together, they form a continuous narrative of the period's aspirations and anxieties, reflecting both the reach and responsibilities of Britain at the height of its global influence.
The set carries distinguished provenance from the library of Osmond de Beauvoir Priaulx (1805-1891), the Guernsey barrister, author, and noted bibliophile who founded the Priaulx Library in 1889. Preserved in their original bindings, these volumes stand as a superb intersection of scholarship, historical record, and literary heritage. They would appeal strongly to collectors of Victorian history, institutional reference works, and those interested in the evolution of British political and imperial reportage."
