The Songs Of England - 72 English Melodies & Ballads
Edited by Eaton Faning
Published by Boosey & Co: London c1873 (undated - inscription dated 1900)

"Brinley Richards' The Songs of Wales (Caneuon Cymru), first published in 1873 by Boosey & Co., is a landmark collection of traditional Welsh melodies arranged for voice and piano, celebrating the musical heritage of Wales. The volume features over two dozen national songs, with English lyrics contributed by literary figures such as Sir Walter Scott, Felicia Hemans, and John Oxenford, and Welsh texts by poets like John Ceiriog Hughes and Mynyddog. Richards, a Romantic-era composer and advocate for Welsh culture, edited the music with new symphonic arrangements, drawing from sources like Jane Williams' prize-winning 1837 collection and works by John Parry (Bardd Alaw). His aim was to preserve and elevate Welsh folk music within the broader European art song tradition.

Despite not speaking Welsh himself, Richards demonstrated remarkable sensitivity in setting Welsh texts to music, earning the bardic name Pencerdd Towy for his cultural contributions. The collection reflects his belief that music is shaped by the landscape and spirit of its origin—a sentiment echoed in the lyrical and melodic character of the songs. The Songs of Wales remains a vital cultural artifact, bridging oral tradition and classical form, and offering a romanticized yet respectful portrayal of Welsh identity through music. Its enduring appeal lies in its fusion of poetic lyricism, national pride, and musical craftsmanship.
