"
This partial set of Cassell's Illustrated History of England represents one of the most ambitious Victorian historical publishing projects of the 19th century. Issued by Cassell, Petter & Galpin of London, this New and Revised Edition, continued to the end of 1873, offers a richly detailed narrative of English history from the earliest periods through to the late 19th century. The six volumes present here — Volumes I, III, IV, V, VI and VII — retain their original leather bindings with gilt‑tooled spines, a hallmark of Cassell's premium editions.
Each volume is profusely illustrated, containing hundreds of engravings, portraits, battle scenes, architectural views, and historical vignettes that bring the text to life. These illustrations were a major selling point of the series and remain highly valued by collectors, historians, and those interested in Victorian book design. Despite the age of the set, the bindings remain visually impressive on the shelf, with the classic Victorian aesthetic that appeals to decorative collectors as much as to readers.
As is common with 19th‑century leather‑bound sets, this group shows signs of age and use. Two volumes lack their title pages, and some pages across the set show tears, chipping, and edge wear. Even so, the books remain largely complete and structurally sound, offering both historical value and strong decorative appeal. This is an attractive opportunity to acquire a substantial portion of Cassell's celebrated historical series in its original 19th‑century bindings."
General wear to covers (volume 1 lacks front cover cloth as shown) and spines as shown. Pages with age toning. Some pages with tears noticed and chipping evident to a few pages. Title pages lacking in 2 volumes. Odd loose page. Overall a substantial and imposing leather bound history book collection that presents well. Please study photos to further understand condition.
