Uncle Tom's Cabin - A Tale Of Life Among The Lowly
By Harriet Beecher Stowe
With A Preface By The Earl Of Carlisle
Published by George Routledge And Sons: London (Broadway, Ludgate Hill) c1867

"Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, A Tale of Life Among the Lowly by Harriet Beecher Stowe is one of the most influential American novels of the nineteenth century, first published in 1852 and quickly becoming an international literary and political phenomenon. Written against the background of slavery in the United States, the novel follows the lives of enslaved people and those around them, combining domestic fiction, religious sentiment and social criticism in a work that had a profound impact on contemporary debate over slavery and abolition.

This edition includes a substantial preface by the Right Hon. the Earl of Carlisle, who writes of the extraordinary public impact of Stowe's book and its moral force as a work directed against slavery. The inclusion of Carlisle's preface is a notable feature of a number of early British Routledge editions and adds further historical interest to the volume as evidence of the book's strong reception in Britain during the nineteenth century.

Published by George Routledge and Sons, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, London, this copy is undated, but the imprint, pagination and format point to a publication date of approximately 1867. Contemporary references record a Routledge "New Edition" of Uncle Tom's Cabin with the Earl of Carlisle's preface appearing in 1867, while the later George Routledge and Sons Ludgate Hill imprint distinguishes this copy from the earlier 1850s Routledge issues. On that basis, c1867 is a reasonable and appropriately cautious dating.

The volume is particularly attractive in its original green decorated cloth binding, elaborately blocked in black and gilt with floral and geometric ornament to the boards and spine. A handsome mid-Victorian edition of a landmark nineteenth-century novel, combining literary, social and publishing history in a form that remains highly collectible."
