The Poetical Works Of John Milton
Edited by Sir Egerton Brydges
Illustrated With Engravings Of Drawings Made by J.M.W. Turner (7 Plates + Frontis Present)
Published by William Tegg: London c1864 (undated however inscription dated 1872 suggests this is likely the 1864 edition)

"This elegant edition of The Poetical Works of John Milton, published by William Tegg in London and edited by Sir Egerton Brydges, presents the full breadth of Milton's poetic genius—from the epic grandeur of Paradise Lost to the lyrical beauty of L'Allegro and Il Penseroso. Brydges' editorial approach offers insightful commentary and contextual framing, making Milton's complex theological and philosophical themes more accessible to 19th-century readers. The volume celebrates Milton not only as a master of blank verse and classical allusion but also as a voice of moral conviction and intellectual rigor.

What sets this edition apart is its visual artistry: it features seven engraved plates and a frontispiece based on original drawings by the renowned landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. These illustrations infuse Milton's verse with atmospheric depth, echoing the sublime and often turbulent imagery of his poetry. The combination of Turner's evocative engravings and Brydges' scholarly touch creates a richly layered reading experience—one that bridges literature and visual art, and honors Milton's enduring legacy as one of England's greatest poets."
