The History Of Spain And Portugal
Volume 3 (From Original 5 Volume Set)
Printed For Longman, Brown, Green & Longmans: London c1832 (undated)
In Original Leather Bindings With Marbled Text Block + Endpapers

"This third volume of The History of Spain and Portugal continues the history of the Iberian Peninsula during the period of Moorish rule and the gradual rise of the Christian kingdoms. Its detailed narrative examines the origins and development of Navarre, Aragon and Catalonia, tracing their rulers, dynastic alliances, territorial struggles and military campaigns from the early medieval centuries through to the beginning of the sixteenth century.

The volume also follows the emergence of Portugal and its transformation into a powerful maritime kingdom. Particular attention is given to Portuguese expansion in Africa and Asia, including the establishment of overseas settlements, the administrations of Albuquerque and his successors, Ferdinand Magellan's search for a western passage to India, and Portuguese conflicts in North Africa. An analytical and chronological table precedes the main text, while a substantial appendix considers historical traditions, disputed accounts and notable Portuguese legends.

Printed in London for Longman, Brown, Green & Longmans, this is Volume III only from the original five-volume work. It includes an engraved title page depicting the murder of Sancho García, after a design by H. Corbould and engraved by Edward Finden. The volume is attractively presented in period half-leather bindings with raised spine bands, gilt decoration and contrasting title labels, together with richly marbled endpapers and matching marbled text-block edges; a surviving South Australian Institute library label provides particularly interesting early Australian provenance."
