" Loïs Castellain was a British author and illustrator renowned for her creation of Adolphus, a charming Clydesdale horse character. Adolphus first appeared in 1939 within the pages of Riding Magazine, serving as a whimsical yet educational figure aimed at young readers. Castellain's talent extended beyond literature; her artistic skills earned her a certificate from the Royal Drawing Society in 1928. Her dedication to art and storytelling culminated in the development of Adolphus, who became a beloved figure in children's literature and media.

The inaugural book, Adolphus, was published in 1939, introducing readers to the titular "broken-down, bone-bag of a carthorse of endearing idiocy and no known lineage" who escapes his cruel owner in search of a better life. The narrative resonated with audiences, leading to a sequel nearly three decades later: Adolphus the TV Horse (1964). In this installment, Adolphus faces redundancy due to mechanization on the farm and embarks on a journey that leads him to brief television fame before realizing his true place back home. The character's popularity extended beyond print; in 1954, Adolphus was adapted into a series of ten-minute films for BBC children's television, with Castellain herself contributing the animations."
