Artful Cats
By Norman Lindsay
Introduced by Meg Stewart
Published by Odana Editions: Bungendore, Australia 2001 1st Edition

"Artful Cats brings together the wonderfully playful feline drawings, paintings and writings of celebrated Australian artist Norman Lindsay (1879-1969). Introduced and compiled by Meg Stewart, the volume explores the cats that inhabited Lindsay's famous Springwood home and studio and became recurring subjects throughout his artistic life. Far removed from the sensual mythological imagery for which Lindsay is perhaps best known, these works reveal an affectionate, humorous and highly spontaneous side of the artist, capturing cats with exaggerated expressions, mischievous personalities and remarkably observant character.

The book combines a substantial selection of Lindsay's cat illustrations in both colour and monochrome with photographs, correspondence, anecdotes and extracts from his writings. Chapters include "Ah, to be a Studio Cat!", "Letters from Norman", "The Cats of Springwood", "Fuzz Buzz, a Studio Cat", "Whimsical Cats", "Cats Can Tell Stories Too!" and "Cats in Compositions", concluding with a bibliography. Particularly engaging are Lindsay's sketches accompanied by handwritten captions, alongside more accomplished compositions demonstrating how frequently cats appeared within his broader artistic output.

Published by Odana Editions, Bungendore, Australia in 2001, this is the First Edition, a handsome large-format illustrated volume extending to approximately 143 pages. Of additional interest, this copy retains a loose National Trust exhibition note titled "Rumpus in Olympus", dated April 1987 and attributed to Ursula Prunster, discussing Lindsay's Springwood circle and the sensual and pagan themes central to his art. An appealing Australian art publication combining Lindsay scholarship, personal history and a delightful collection of feline imagery, with obvious crossover appeal to collectors of Norman Lindsay, Australian art and cat-related books."
