Incident At Nolava Beach, or, The Nagual
By Rod Milgate
Published by UNSW 1993 1st Edition
Signed by Author - Limited Edition #9 Of Just 50 Copies Printed

" Incident at Nolava Beach, or, The Nagual is an experimental novel by Australian painter, playwright, poet and novelist Rod Milgate. Unfolding across seven chapters—including "Margaret," "Seascape with Dog," "Mixed Media," "Vera" and "Intrusions"—the work blends narrative fiction with poetry and visual art. Its shifting forms and perspectives explore memory, family relationships, creativity, grief and the elusive boundary between ordinary experience and the imaginative or spiritual world suggested by the "nagual" of the title.

Milgate's prose is richly visual and often moves between close observation, interior reflection, dialogue and verse. Images of landscape, art and domestic life recur throughout, while humour and social commentary sit beside darker meditations upon identity, mortality and remembrance. The result is an unusual multimedia work in which words and paintings respond to one another, reflecting Milgate's parallel careers as both a writer and a visual artist.

Published in May 1993 by the Desktop Publishing Unit of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, this is an exceptionally scarce first edition limited to only 50 copies. The volume incorporates numerous reproductions of Milgate's paintings, including Appointed Stars, Journey Into Self, The Family and Dilemma or Intrusions. This is copy number 9 of the edition, individually numbered and signed by Rod Milgate upon the title page. "
