" Crossing the Gap: A Novelist's Essays brings together nine essays by acclaimed Australian novelist C. J. Koch, author of The Year of Living Dangerously and winner of the 1985 Miles Franklin Award for The Doubleman. Combining memoir, travel writing and literary criticism, the collection traces the experiences and intellectual influences that shaped Koch's development as a writer, while examining the changing character of Australian culture during the decades following the Second World War.

The central theme is Australia's gradual movement away from its inherited British imperial identity towards a broader Asian-Pacific consciousness. Koch ranges from his native Tasmania and 1950s London to Sukarno's Indonesia, India and California, recalling his encounters with different places, cultures and generations. Individual essays consider writers and thinkers including Rudyard Kipling, Nirad C. Chaudhuri, Hermann Hesse, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Carlos Castaneda and Australian poet Les Murray, alongside reflections upon Tasmania, mythology, spirituality and the novel as a form of narrative poetry.

Published in London by Chatto & Windus in 1987, this first edition is presented in its original illustrated dustjacket, featuring a detail from Albert Henry Fullwood's 1893 painting Hop-pickers at New Norfolk (Tasmania). This copy is particularly desirable for having been personally signed by C. J. Koch in blue ink upon the title page. An appealing association copy of an insightful essay collection by one of Australia's most distinguished twentieth-century novelists."
