"Homo Sovieticus is one of the major works of Russian philosopher, sociologist and satirist Alexander Zinoviev, examining the distinctive human type he believed had been created by decades of Soviet communist society. Combining fiction, political philosophy and social criticism, Zinoviev centres the work upon a group of Soviet émigrés living in a German pension, each attempting in his own fashion to establish a place in the West. Through their conversations, behaviour and contradictions emerges his provocative concept of homo sovieticus — an adaptable, resourceful and morally flexible product of the Soviet system.

Zinoviev's satire is directed not only towards Soviet communism but also towards the West and its understanding of its Cold War adversary. Drawing upon his own experience as a Soviet academic, outspoken anti-Stalinist and eventual exile, he challenges Western assumptions concerning Soviet society, emigration and the ideological struggle between East and West. Beneath the humour and deliberate absurdity lies a serious examination of conformity, opportunism, ideology and the capacity of political systems to shape individual character. Zinoviev himself had served as a Soviet military pilot during the Second World War, later becoming a professor and member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences before increasing official harassment culminated in his expulsion from the USSR in 1978.
