"Norman Lindsay's Bears is a delightful collection of the celebrated Australian artist's bear illustrations, selected by Keith Wingrove and centred particularly upon Billy Bluegum, the famous koala character immortalised in Lindsay's The Magic Pudding. The collection reaches well beyond that classic 1918 book, gathering earlier and lesser-known drawings originally produced for publications including The Bulletin and The Lone Hand. Lindsay's bears become wonderfully expressive human characters, used to portray Australian society, politics and everyday life with the wit, satire and extraordinary draughtsmanship for which he became renowned.

Wingrove provides historical context tracing Billy Bluegum's development, including Lindsay's early koala cartoons dating from 1904, years before The Magic Pudding. Across the following decades Lindsay placed his bears into an extraordinary variety of situations: elections, marriage and divorce, Christmas, horse racing, social life and even war. Among the particularly striking sequences is "Bill Jim Bluegum Comes Home", depicting the returning serviceman through a series of humorous vignettes. The book consequently offers much more than charming animal illustration; it provides an engaging visual record of Australian humour and social commentary during the first half of the twentieth century.

Published by Macmillan, South Melbourne in 1978, this is the First Edition, retaining its attractive original unclipped illustrated dustjacket. The volume reproduces a substantial collection of Lindsay's black-and-white drawings, including material that had remained buried for decades in the files of The Bulletin and The Lone Hand, together with both the first and last Billy Bluegum illustrations drawn by Lindsay. An appealing and distinctly Australian Norman Lindsay publication, combining his enduring fascination with native animals, the history of Billy Bluegum and a wealth of rarely encountered satirical artwork."
