Angus McMillan: Pathfinder
By Kenneth Cox
Published by Olinda Public Relations: Olinda 1973 1st Edition
In Original Dustjacket

" Angus McMillan: Pathfinder by Kenneth Cox is a biographical account of the Scottish-born explorer and pastoralist whose journeys helped open the Gippsland region of eastern Victoria to settlement. Beginning with McMillan's origins on the Isle of Skye and his voyage to Australia, the book follows his early colonial experiences and the demanding expeditions through mountains, dense forests, rivers and lakes that had long made Gippsland a formidable natural barrier.

Cox recounts McMillan's search for a route from the Australian Alps to the coast, his establishment of Bushy Park and his role in the beginnings of Port Albert and the wider pastoral development of Gippsland. Later chapters cover the gold era, McMillan's work as an official in the district, his involvement in Aboriginal affairs, and the disasters and personal setbacks that accompanied his achievements. The result is a sympathetic but detailed portrait of a determined Highlander whose courage and endurance brought recognition, though comparatively little material reward.

Illustrated with historical photographs and maps, including map endpapers showing the routes of early Victorian explorers, the volume combines personal biography with a broader history of exploration and settlement in nineteenth-century Gippsland. Complete with source references and an index, this is the 1973 first edition published by Olinda Public Relations, presented in its original Vane Lindsay-designed dustjacket."
