" The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith is Thomas Keneally's powerful historical novel inspired by the life of Jimmy Governor and the events surrounding the Breelong killings in New South Wales in 1900. Keneally freely reimagines the historical figures as Jimmie Blacksmith and his family, using their story to examine the uneasy relations between Aboriginal people and European settlers at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is a work of fiction rather than a literal historical account, but its setting and central drama are firmly rooted in Australian history.

Jimmie, the son of an Aboriginal mother and a white father, is encouraged by a missionary to adopt European customs, work diligently and seek advancement within colonial society. He becomes a skilled horseman and fencer, marries a white woman and attempts to establish a respectable independent life. Yet despite his efforts, he is repeatedly cheated, humiliated and treated as an outsider by employers and officials, while remaining increasingly separated from the traditional community into which he was born.

The accumulated grievances eventually erupt into a terrible act of violence, after which Jimmie, his brother Mort and their reluctant hostage are pursued across the countryside by police, settlers and trackers. Their flight into the rugged mountains of northern New South Wales becomes both a gripping manhunt and a psychological study of a man forced to confront the consequences of his actions. Keneally presents Jimmie as neither a simple hero nor a conventional villain, but as a tragic and divided figure shaped by personal choices, racial hostility and the conflicting demands of two worlds.

Widely regarded as one of Keneally's major novels, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith was shortlisted for the 1972 Booker Prize and later adapted into Fred Schepisi's acclaimed 1978 film. This is the true 1972 first edition, published in Sydney by Angus and Robertson and printed in Australia by Halstead Press. It is presented in its original unclipped dustjacket, featuring Arthur Boyd's painting Frightened Bridegroom I, an especially distinctive feature of this important Australian literary first edition.
