A Tale Of A Tub
By Jonathan Swift
Published by The Clarendon Press: Oxford 1965

" Jonathan Swift's A Tale of a Tub, first published in 1704, is one of the most brilliant and audacious satires of the early eighteenth century. Written at a time of fierce religious and intellectual controversy, the work takes the form of an elaborate allegory in which three brothers—Peter, Martin, and Jack—represent Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism, and Protestant Dissent. Through their increasingly absurd attempts to alter their inherited coats (symbolising Christian doctrine), Swift delivers a biting critique of religious corruption, sectarian excess, and the distortions of original faith. The satire is layered, ironic, and deliberately digressive, reflecting both Swift's intellectual daring and his mastery of parody.

Interwoven with the central allegory are a series of mock-scholarly digressions in which Swift lampoons contemporary learning, philosophical fads, literary pretension, and the vanity of modern authors. In companion pieces such as The Battle of the Books and The Mechanical Operation of the Spirit, included in this Clarendon Press edition, Swift extends his satire to the quarrel between ancient and modern writers and to the theatrical excesses of religious enthusiasm. The tone oscillates between playful absurdity and savage irony, revealing Swift's deep scepticism toward dogmatism, intellectual fashion, and institutional hypocrisy.

This 1965 Oxford Clarendon Press edition, edited with scholarly introduction and notes by A. C. Guthkelch and D. Nichol Smith, presents the text in a carefully revised and annotated form, restoring its historical and literary context for modern readers. Swift's work remains a cornerstone of Augustan satire—bold, irreverent, and intellectually demanding—appealing to collectors of eighteenth-century literature, scholars of religious and political satire, and admirers of Swift's formidable wit and polemical brilliance."
