"First published in 1860, The British Journal Photographic Almanac and Photographer's Daily Companion became one of Britain's longest-running and most important annual reference works devoted to photography. This 1957 edition, edited by Arthur J. Dalladay, represents the 98th year of publication and captures photographic practice at a fascinating transitional moment, when traditional black-and-white photography remained dominant while colour processes, electronic flash and increasingly sophisticated cameras and materials were rapidly transforming the medium.

The volume combines practical instruction, technical reference and contemporary photographic commentary, with contributions including "Physics and Metaphysics in Modern Photography," "Replenishing the Developer," "The Beauty of Wild Flowers," "Photography and Television" and "The Use of Filters in Colour Photography." Extensive reference sections cover new photographic equipment and materials, chemicals, photographic formulae, negative and positive processes, tables and a comprehensive index. Of particular historical interest are the numerous period advertisements for cameras, films and photographic equipment, including striking Kodak advertising for Kodachrome and Ektachrome colour films, providing an excellent snapshot of the international photographic industry of the mid-1950s.

Illustration is a major feature of the Almanac, the original cover advertising 32 gravure pictures, alongside numerous photographs and technical illustrations throughout. The colour advertising material is especially evocative, including a fine full-page Ektachrome colour reproduction. Published in London by Henry Greenwood & Co. Ltd. in 1957, this substantial specialist annual is both a practical historical reference and an appealing collectible for photographers, camera collectors and those interested in the development of twentieth-century photographic technology, processes and advertising."
