1956 The Bunyip Of Barney's Elbow B. James Australian Fiction Book SIGNED 1st Ed

The Bunyip Of Barney's Elbow
By Brian James
Foreword by Norman Lindsay
Published by Angus And Robertson: Sydney 1956 1st Edition
SIGNED BY AUTHOR - Includes Original Unclipped Dustjacket

" The Bunyip of Barney's Elbow is Brian James's second collection of short stories, presenting eighteen tales of Australian country and small-town life. Set among farms, dusty streets, rivers, ranges and isolated rural communities, the stories capture an assortment of farmers, labourers, townspeople, eccentrics and local identities whose ambitions, weaknesses and unexpected predicaments provide material for both comedy and pathos. The fictional town of Summerlea and its surrounding district form a particularly vivid landscape in which these characters come naturally to life.

The collection opens with the title story and continues through such pieces as "Hoffy," "The Saintliness of Greg," "The Pick-handle in the Cellar," "The Triumph of Mrs Bolton," "Joe Waite's Lantern," "The Hagney Affair" and "Coming Down from Tip-Top." James writes in an easy, lucid manner closely resembling the rhythms of spoken Australian English, allowing character to emerge through dialogue, gesture and action. His humour is frequently ironic and sardonic, yet remains affectionate towards the people and communities he portrays.

A substantial foreword by celebrated Australian artist and author Norman Lindsay praises James's instinct for the essentials of the short-story form, his sharp eye for human idiosyncrasy and his ability to move across the narrow boundary between tragedy and comedy. Lindsay compares his detached but fascinated observation of life with that of Guy de Maupassant, while emphasising the distinctively Australian character of the stories. The book's striking red dustjacket also features a lively Norman Lindsay illustration, making it especially attractive as an association between two Australian literary figures.

First published by Angus and Robertson in Sydney in 1956, this copy is from the original first edition and has been personally signed by Brian James on the title page. It retains its original unclipped dustjacket with the publisher's price of 16 shillings present. Combining James's signature, Lindsay's foreword and jacket artwork, and a strong collection of mid-century Australian rural stories, this is a particularly desirable copy of the author's second short-story collection.
