The Captain's Death Bed and other essays.
By Virginia Woolf
Published by The Hogarth Press: London 1950 1st Edition
With Original (Clipped) Dustjacket

" Published posthumously by the Hogarth Press in 1950, The Captain's Death Bed and Other Essays is the fifth and final volume in the original sequence of Virginia Woolf's collected essays. Edited and introduced by her husband, Leonard Woolf, the collection gathers pieces written during the final two decades of her life, including essays previously issued in newspapers, literary journals and pamphlets, together with others appearing in book form for the first time.

The volume presents a broad cross-section of Woolf's work as an essayist and critic. Its subjects range from Oliver Goldsmith, Gilbert White, Crabbe, Ruskin, Turgenev, Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad to reflections upon reading, reviewing, modern letters, cinema and contemporary life. More personal and observational pieces—including "Flying Over London," "The Sun and the Fish," "Thunder at Wembley" and the title essay—demonstrate her characteristic ability to unite intellectual precision with imaginative, fluid and highly perceptive prose.

This desirable first edition was published by the Woolfs' own Hogarth Press and retains its original price-clipped dustjacket, featuring the distinctive artwork of Virginia's sister, Vanessa Bell. The association between author, editor, artist and publisher gives the volume particular Bloomsbury significance, making it an appealing collectible edition of Woolf's final gathering of essays."
