" The Royal Australian Air Force War Paintings Exhibition Catalogue 1946 records an important travelling exhibition assembled immediately after the Second World War to present the work of the RAAF's official war artists to the Australian public. Organised through the Air Force's War History Section, the exhibition toured the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and major galleries in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart. Its purpose was to preserve not only an accurate visual record of RAAF operations, but also the atmosphere and personal experience of the airmen who flew and the men and women who kept them flying.

The catalogue lists 109 works by three serving RAAF artists: Flight Lieutenant Harold Freedman, Flying Officer Eric Thake and Flying Officer Max Newton. Executed in oils, watercolours, gouache and drawings, their subjects range from fighter pilots, aircraft maintenance and operational headquarters to wrecked Japanese aircraft, prisoner-of-war labour, tropical camps and scenes witnessed across Australia, New Guinea, the Netherlands East Indies and Borneo. Several monochrome reproductions are included, together with a foreword by artist and critic Clive Turnbull and an official introduction signed by Air Vice-Marshal George Jones, Chief of the Air Staff.

Published by the Royal Australian Air Force and printed in Melbourne by R.P.P.U. in 1946, this is an original catalogue from the exhibition rather than a later historical reproduction. Proceeds from its sale were donated to RAAF welfare organisations, making each surviving copy both an exhibition record and a tangible product of the immediate post-war period. Retained within the same family since 1946 and formerly belonging to the present owner's grandfather, this scarce piece of Australian aviation, military and art history carries particularly appealing personal provenance."
