1942 Zinc Corporation Broken Hill Mining NSW Illustrated Australian History Book

The Zinc Corporation - Broken Hill
New South Wales, Australia
Published by The Zinc Corporation Ltd: Broken Hill, NSW 1942
In Original Softcovers - Scarce Broken Hill WW2 Era Publication

" Published in July 1942, this scarce wartime company publication provides a fascinating illustrated account of The Zinc Corporation Ltd. at Broken Hill, New South Wales, one of the great enterprises associated with Australia's internationally important Broken Hill mining field. Printed for the Zinc Corporation by the Barrier Daily Truth Print, Broken Hill, the booklet opens with the company's directors, staff and management—including Chairman John R. Govett, Sir Clive Baillieu, Sir Cecil Budd and Managing Director W. S. Robinson—and records its Melbourne office at Collins House, Collins Street. The original pictorial wrappers feature a striking illustration of the mine headframe and plant above the title The Zinc Corporation - Broken Hill.

The publication gives a substantial contemporary account of the history and development of the Broken Hill mining field, beginning with the discovery and exploitation of its enormous silver, lead and zinc deposits and continuing through the development of modern mining operations. Particularly interesting are the numerous period photographs of the mine and its workings, including the historic Broken Hill outcrop, shafts and surface plant, concentration facilities and machinery. Detailed sections describe the mill, crushing and grinding processes, lead and zinc flotation, reagent consumption and other technical aspects of mineral processing, making this considerably more than a simple promotional brochure.

Equally fascinating is its documentation of the social and working life of Broken Hill during the Second World War. Sections cover employee safety, education and community facilities, including the Zinc Corporation's Railway Town Children's Playground, scholarships and recreation. Of particular historical interest are detailed accident statistics for 1938-1942, culminating in figures for the first six months of 1942, providing an unusually immediate snapshot of Australian mining conditions during the wartime period. Profusely illustrated throughout and firmly dated July 1942, this is an excellent piece of original Broken Hill ephemera with strong appeal to collectors of Australian mining history, Broken Hill and NSW history, industrial history, corporate history and wartime Australiana.
