1939 North Cape by F.D. Ommanney Antique Maritime History Book WW2 Provenance

North Cape
By F.D. Ommanney
Published by Longmans, Green And Co: London 1939 New Impression
Provenance: Carries A Signed Inscription Dated 25th September 1943

" North Cape is F. D. Ommanney's vivid and deeply personal account of life aboard a British deep-sea trawler operating in the harsh waters between Britain, Iceland, and the Arctic seas immediately before the outbreak of the Second World War. Seeking to experience the industry from the inside, Ommanney signed on as an ordinary deckhand aboard the Lincoln Star, immersing himself in one of the most demanding and dangerous occupations of the era. The result is far more than a travel narrative; it is an authentic portrait of the men who earned their living from the sea, capturing the hardships, camaraderie, humour, and resilience that defined the North Atlantic fishing fleets.

Written with both the eye of a natural observer and the skill of an accomplished author, the book combines adventure, social history, and maritime reportage. Ommanney records the brutal realities of trawling in Arctic waters, from storms, freezing conditions, and exhausting labour to the fleeting moments of beauty encountered beneath northern skies. His descriptions of Icelandic ports, remote fishing grounds, and the daily routines of the crew provide a fascinating snapshot of a maritime world that was already beginning to disappear. Illustrated with twenty photographic plates, the work offers a valuable contemporary record of the fishing industry and seafaring life on the eve of war.

This 1939 New Impression carries particularly appealing provenance in the form of a signed presentation inscription dated 25th September 1943. The inscription appears to have been signed by several individuals and includes a heartfelt message wishing the recipient a speedy return, suggesting a wartime or service-related association during one of the most turbulent periods of the twentieth century. Combined with the original dustjacket and Ommanney's celebrated account of the North Atlantic fishing fleets, this provenance adds an additional layer of historical interest and human connection to an already engaging work of maritime literature."
