1935 2vol Prose Works Of Henry Lawson Antique Australian Literature Book Set

The Prose Works Of Henry Lawson
By Henry Lawson
Published by Home Entertainment Library: Sydney 1935
Complete 2 Volume Set

"The Prose Works of Henry Lawson brings together in two substantial volumes the stories and sketches of one of Australia's most important and enduring writers. Drawing upon Lawson's experiences of city poverty, itinerant labour and life in the Australian bush, the collection portrays selectors, shearers, swagmen, drovers and working families with characteristic directness, humour and compassion. His unsentimental realism captures both the severe isolation of the landscape and the loyalty, resilience and dry wit of those who inhabited it.

Volume I opens with While the Billy Boils and includes celebrated pieces such as "The Drover's Wife," "The Union Buries Its Dead," "On the Edge of a Plain" and numerous Steelman and Mitchell stories. Volume II contains the interconnected Joe Wilson narratives and further selections including "The Loaded Dog," "The Babies in the Bush," "The Buck-Jumper" and "A Bush Dance." Together, the two volumes provide a broad representation of Lawson's prose and the memorable characters, laconic speech and social observation that helped define Australia's national literary tradition.

Published in Sydney by the Home Entertainment Library in 1935, the complete two-volume set was typeset, printed and bound in Australia by the Halstead Printing Company Ltd. Both volumes are uniformly bound in green cloth with ruled decoration, Lawson's facsimile signature to the front boards and gilt titles and volume numbers to the spines. An appealing Australian-produced collected edition, the set offers an extensive selection of Lawson's finest prose in its complete original two-volume form."
