Cruising & Ocean Racing is an impressive and extensively illustrated early 20th-century reference to the art, practice and technicalities of yachting, published by Seeley Service & Co., London in 1933 as Volume XV of the celebrated Lonsdale Library. Principally associated with E. G. Martin and John Irving, the work brings together contributions from a substantial group of recognised authorities including J. R. Barnett, George Corderoy, W. Lyall, J. B. Kirkpatrick, W. McC. Meek, L. Richardson, R. Somerset, Sir Arthur Underhill and Brian Waite. The publisher advertised the volume as containing over five hundred illustrations, making it a particularly substantial period record of cruising and competitive sailing between the wars.
The scope is remarkably broad, beginning with types and design of cruising yachts, yacht construction and auxiliary power before progressing through masts and spars, sails, dinghies, ground tackle, boatswain's stores and work, painting and varnishing, fitting-out and preparation for sea. Later sections address practical seamanship including getting under way, manoeuvring under sail, passage-making, light and heavy weather, anchoring and mooring, coastal navigation, weather lore, rules of the road, accidents and repairs, cooking, ship's papers and registration, and the employment of paid hands. Throughout, the text is accompanied by a wealth of period photographs, technical drawings, diagrams and detailed illustrations of yachts, rigging, construction and equipment.
Especially desirable is the survival of the original pictorial dustjacket, featuring dramatic period sailing photography to the front and a yacht illustration to the spine, with contemporary reviews printed to the rear flap. Dustjackets of this era were routinely discarded or heavily worn, and its presence gives this example considerably greater visual and collecting appeal.
