"
Commissioned by the St Kilda City Council and compiled by noted Victorian historian John Butler Cooper, The History of St Kilda: From Its First Settlement to a City and After, 1840-1930 remains an important record of one of Melbourne's most distinctive municipalities. Published in 1931, the work traces St Kilda's transformation from an isolated seaside settlement into a thriving city, documenting its civic administration, public institutions, transport, parks and changing coastal landscape.
This second volume covers such subjects as the volunteer movement, Albert Park, successive town halls, railway development, municipal markets, postal services, the Esplanade and foreshore, sea bathing and local boundary disputes. Later chapters record St Kilda's contribution to the South African War and First World War, the development of its memorials and public reserves, its municipal officers and councillors, and the ceremonial visits of royal and vice-regal guests. Appendices provide lists of mayors and councillors, public reserves and financial statistics, followed by a comprehensive index.
The volume is generously illustrated with historic photographs, portraits and views preserving vanished streetscapes, public buildings and familiar landmarks at different stages of their development. Published by Printers Proprietary Limited of Melbourne in the original blue cloth binding bearing the gilt seal of the City of St Kilda, this is Volume II only of Cooper's two-volume first edition. Complete in itself with all illustrations present, it remains a valuable reference for collectors and researchers interested in St Kilda, Melbourne municipal government, local genealogy and Victorian social history."
