Reed's Seamanship is a substantial early twentieth-century practical manual of maritime knowledge, compiled specifically for candidates preparing for examinations for Certificates of Competency as Mates and Masters. This is the Twenty-Fourth Edition, revised and enlarged by C. M. Swainston and published by Thomas Reed & Co. Ltd of Sunderland in 1929. The long-running Reed manuals were closely associated with the professional training and examination of British merchant-marine officers, covering the practical knowledge expected of men progressing through the ranks towards command.
Extensive in scope, the volume encompasses traditional and steam-era seamanship together with shipbuilding, stability, meteorology and compass deviation. Subjects illustrated in this copy include rigging and sails, logs and sounding lines, anchors and ground tackle, cargoes, signalling, navigation lights, steering, ship construction and the structural anatomy of iron and steel vessels. The book is particularly notable for its wealth of technical illustration: the title page records 165 diagrams, ranging from sailing-ship rigging and mechanical apparatus to detailed sectional drawings explaining frames, decks, plating and double-bottom construction. The preface states that new examination questions and diagrams had been incorporated into this edition, including extensive answered sections devoted to meteorology, shipbuilding and stability.
A particularly attractive feature is the surviving large folding colour chart of the Flags of the Commercial Code of Signals for the Use of All Nations. Printed by Thomas Reed & Co., the chart illustrates individual code flags and pennants together with examples of two-, three- and four-flag combinations and their interpretation. Such material gives the book considerable visual and historical interest beyond its original function as an examination manual, documenting the systems of communication, ship handling and professional knowledge expected aboard merchant vessels during the inter-war period.
Most appealingly, this copy retains its original pictorial dustjacket, with a striking steamship illustration printed in black, blue and red and the original 6/6 net price displayed on the front. Beneath is the handsome original blue cloth binding with gilt titles. The survival together of the period dustjacket, illustrated contents and folding colour signal chart makes this an especially attractive example of a working maritime reference book from the late 1920s, with strong appeal to collectors of nautical history, merchant shipping, seamanship and marine engineering."
Light wear and some chipping to dustjacket protected with a clear plastic sleeve. Pages clean and well presented. A nice copy in very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
