Achievement In Photo Engraving and Letter-Press Printing
Compiled and Edited by Louis Flader
Published by The American Photo Engravers Association: Chicago 1927 1st Edition

" Achievement in Photo Engraving and Letter-Press Printing (1927), compiled and edited by Louis Flader, is a landmark volume celebrating the technical progress and artistic refinement of the photo-engraving industry during the early 20th century. Produced under the auspices of The American Photo Engravers Association, the book provides a detailed account of how photographic engraving evolved from a mechanical craft into a recognized art form. It documents key advances in halftone reproduction, zinc and copper plate etching, screen technology, and the development of improved presses that made high-quality image reproduction possible for newspapers, magazines, and books. Through essays, illustrations, and examples, the volume serves both as a historical record and as a showcase of the precision and beauty achievable through letterpress printing when combined with photographic methods.

The book also highlights the collaborative nature of the industry, acknowledging engravers, press operators, and designers who worked together to push the medium forward. It includes numerous reproductions of award-winning engravings, demonstrating the highest standards of craftsmanship of the period and inspiring pride within the trade. More than a technical manual, it is a commemorative volume meant to inspire future generations of printers and engravers to uphold the quality and innovation that brought photo-engraving to its artistic peak in the 1920s."

General wear and fading to cover and spine as shown. This is a very large and heavy book and there are crude tape repairs to first and last inside pages to secure it. Pages are typically very clean and there are no inscriptions or annotations. Some light age marks are present mainly from colour transfer to opposite page. There are no loose pages and the books presents as complete. I noticed a tear to the binding edge of one colour page as shown. Overall this is a decent copy in good condition aside from the issues shown and discussed. Please study photos to understand condition. Happy to provide more photos on request.
