The Sonnet In Australasia
A Survey & Selection by Louis Lavater
Published by Edward A. Vidler: Melbourne 1926 1st Edition
In Original Green & Gilt Cloth Decorated Bindings - Limited Edition No. 96 Of 250 Copies

"Published in Melbourne by Edward A. Vidler in 1926, The Sonnet in Australasia: A Survey and Selection is an important anthology and critical study compiled by the poet, musician, and literary figure Louis Lavater. Produced as a Subscribers' Edition limited to just 250 numbered copies, this first edition sought to document and celebrate the development of the sonnet form within Australia and New Zealand. Combining literary criticism with a substantial anthology of selected works, Lavater created one of the earliest serious examinations of the sonnet tradition in the Australasian context.

The volume opens with an extensive historical survey tracing the sonnet's origins and evolution before examining how Australasian poets adapted the form to local themes, landscapes, and cultural concerns. The anthology itself is arranged by subject, including sections devoted to love, fantasy, seasons, places, people, war, religion, and mortality. Represented are many of the leading literary voices of the period, including Christopher Brennan, Ada Cambridge, Martin Boyd, Vance Palmer, Leon Gellert, Robert D. Fitzgerald, and numerous other Australian and New Zealand poets whose work helped establish a distinct regional poetic tradition.

An especially desirable feature of this copy is its limitation statement identifying it as No. 96 of only 250 copies issued, signed by Louis Lavater. Such copies were produced for subscribers and were intended for collectors and literary enthusiasts rather than the general book trade. Preserved in its original green and gilt cloth bindings, the work remains a significant contribution to Australian literary scholarship and an attractive example of the flourishing interest in national literature during the interwar years. It stands as both a reference work and a substantial anthology, preserving many notable sonnets from a formative period in Australasian poetry."
