Rose Of Spadgers
A Sequel To "Ginger Mick"
By C.J. Dennis
Published by Cornstalk Publishing Company: Sydney 1924 2nd Edition
With Stunning Original Unclipped Dustjacket

"A handsome Second Edition of C. J. Dennis's Rose of Spadgers: A Sequel to "Ginger Mick", published in Sydney by the Cornstalk Publishing Company in 1924. Written in Dennis's celebrated Australian vernacular, the book returns to the world of The Sentimental Bloke and The Moods of Ginger Mick, following Ginger Mick's widow Rose as the Bloke attempts to look after her interests and protect her from the scheming Spike Wegg. The work comprises sixteen connected poems and concludes with Dennis's useful glossary of Australian slang.

The volume is illustrated throughout by Hal Gye, whose drawings had become inseparably associated with Dennis's characters following their enormously successful collaboration on The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke. Gye's atmospheric pen-and-ink illustrations appear throughout the text, while this copy is bound in its striking original red cloth lettered in black. Rose of Spadgers was in fact the final major Dennis volume illustrated by Gye, bringing to a close one of the most recognisable author-illustrator partnerships in early twentieth-century Australian publishing.

Most importantly, this copy retains its stunning original illustrated dustjacket, complete with the wonderful full-colour Hal Gye street scene to the front and the publisher's advertisements preserved on the flaps. Early Australian dustjackets are notoriously vulnerable, and the survival of this example gives the book tremendous visual and collecting appeal; the jacket even retains its original 2/6 price, making it genuinely unclipped. The book also carries an early owner's inscription dated 1932. An exceptionally attractive example of a classic piece of Australian vernacular literature, and a particularly desirable survival in its scarce original pictorial dustjacket."

Light wear to dustjacket protected with a clear plastic sleeve. Small prior owner name only. Light spotting to prelims otherwise pages clean and well presented. A stunning copy in very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
