1924 Babylon by Winifred Shaw & Hugh McCrae Antique Australian Literature Book

Babylon
By Winifred Shaw
Decorations by Hugh McCrae
Published by Art In Australia Ltd: Sydney 1924 1st Edition
Edition Limited to Just 600 Copies - Inscription From Author Dated March, 1924

" Babylon is an ambitious poetic work by Australian author Winifred Shaw, published by Art in Australia Ltd, Sydney, in 1924 and enriched throughout with decorative illustrations by the celebrated Australian poet and artist Hugh McCrae. Written in twelve cantos and introduced by Arthur Jose, the work draws upon Biblical and ancient Near Eastern themes to present a dramatic and imaginative retelling of the story of ancient Babylon. Rich in symbolism and classical imagery, it reflects the fascination with antiquity and romantic verse that characterised Australian literary culture during the early twentieth century.

Produced to the high standards for which Art in Australia Ltd became renowned, this handsome volume represents an important example of Australian fine press publishing between the wars. Hugh McCrae's distinctive decorations complement the text beautifully, while the elegant typography and restrained design lend the work considerable artistic appeal. Issued in a limited edition of just 600 copies, Babylon occupies a notable place among the more refined and scarce productions of Australian literary publishing during the 1920s.

This particular copy possesses exceptional provenance, being warmly inscribed by the author on the front endpaper, "To Mr. Jose from Winifred Shaw, March 1924." The recipient was almost certainly Arthur Jose, noted Australian historian, journalist and man of letters, who contributed the introduction to the volume. Such a contemporary presentation inscription establishes a direct association between author and contributor, greatly enhancing the desirability of an already scarce work. Combining literary significance, artistic merit and outstanding provenance, this inscribed first edition is a particularly appealing example of Australian poetry and fine press craftsmanship."
