1922 Romance by Furnley Maurice Antique Literature Book Limited Ed Private Press

Romance
By Furnley Maurice
Published by Sydney J. Endacott: Melbourne 1922
Limited Edition To Just Two Hundred Copies - Privately Printed

" Romance by Furnley Maurice (the pen name of Frank Wilmot) is one of the more attractive productions of early twentieth-century Australian private press publishing. Issued by Sydney J. Endacott in Melbourne in 1922, the work was printed from hand-set type at the Argonaut Press in Brunswick and produced in a strictly limited edition of just two hundred numbered and signed copies. Bound in simple black boards with paper title labels, the volume reflects the refined and understated aesthetic favoured by Australian literary circles of the period.

Rather than a work of fiction, Romance comprises a series of essays and reflective prose pieces by one of Australia's most respected poets and men of letters. Furnley Maurice enjoyed a distinguished literary career and was closely associated with the development of Australian writing during the early decades of the twentieth century. Contemporary critics regarded the essays contained within Romance as beautifully written and representative of Maurice's thoughtful and highly individual style.

Today, Romance stands as an uncommon and highly desirable example of fine Australian private press production. The combination of its tiny limitation of only two hundred copies, its association with the noted poet Frank Wilmot, and its handsome hand-set typography gives the volume considerable appeal to collectors of Australian literature, poetry and finely printed books. Surviving examples are scarce, particularly in well-preserved condition, and the work occupies an important place within the literary culture of interwar Australia."
