Fought and Won
By John Lewis
Published by W.K. Thomas & Co: Adelaide 1922 1st Edition
In Original Bindings - All Illustrations Present - Foldout Map - Author Family PROVENANCE.

" Published in Adelaide in 1922, Fought And Won is the remarkable autobiography of John Lewis, one of the most energetic figures in the pastoral, commercial and political development of South Australia and the Northern Territory. Born at Brighton, South Australia, in 1844, Lewis was the son of early colonists and grew up amid the hardships and opportunities of a young settlement. His memoir begins with childhood recollections before following his progression from farm labourer and blacksmith to drover, station agent, pastoralist, explorer and influential businessman.

Of particular historical importance is Lewis's account of his pioneering overland journey to the Northern Territory during the construction of the Overland Telegraph. Travelling through remote country from the settled southern colonies towards Port Darwin and Port Essington, he encountered isolated stations, prospectors, telegraph parties and Aboriginal communities. The book also records his experiences in pastoral settlement, horse and cattle dealing, mineral exploration and the development of properties across inland Australia, providing a vivid first-hand account of colonial enterprise and frontier travel.

Lewis subsequently became a leading stock and station agent, pastoral company director and long-serving member of the South Australian Legislative Council. His reminiscences encompass the Burra mining district, Broken Hill, the Northern Territory, prominent pastoral families and the immense logistical difficulties of travel and communication across nineteenth-century Australia. Combining personal adventure with valuable observations of places, industries and people, Fought And Won remains an important primary source for the history of South Australian pastoralism and northern exploration.

This scarce first edition is illustrated with 25 photographic plates, all present, and retains the important folding map showing Lewis's overland route from Melbourne to Vashon Head in the Northern Territory. Of exceptional interest is the contemporary presentation inscription, " From Lance Lewis, Sep. 1923 "—Major Lancelot Ashley Lewis, the author's youngest son—dated only weeks after John Lewis's death in August 1923. Preserved in its original gilt-lettered and decorated cloth binding, this is a highly desirable family-association copy of an important Australian exploration and pioneering memoir."
