The Poetical Works Of John Milton
Edited by Rev. H.C. Beeching
Published by Humphrey Milford: Oxford University Press 1916
With Handwritten Inscription Dated December 1919

"The Poetical Works Of John Milton, edited after the original texts by Rev. H.C. Beeching, presents the major poetic writings of one of the defining figures of English literature. Milton's work combines classical learning, religious conviction and extraordinary command of language, with Paradise Lost standing among the great achievements of seventeenth-century poetry. This collected edition offers a substantial representation of his verse in a form intended for both serious reading and general literary appreciation.

Published by Humphrey Milford for Oxford University Press in 1916, this Oxford Edition was edited by the noted scholar and clergyman H.C. Beeching. The volume includes a portrait frontispiece of Milton after the painting by Faithorne and is presented in an attractive period binding with gilt titling, decorative gilt inner borders and marbled endpapers, giving it the appearance of a handsome early twentieth-century gift or presentation volume.

Of additional interest is the handwritten presentation inscription to the front endpaper, dated December 1919, reading in part, "To Dear Miss Hagens, In appreciation of your kindness toward me…" Such contemporary inscriptions add an appealing element of provenance and place the book firmly within the immediate post-First World War period. A pleasing 1916 Oxford edition of Milton, enhanced by its period binding, portrait frontispiece and dated personal inscription."
