"A Child's Garden of Verses is Robert Louis Stevenson's enduring collection of poetry devoted to the imaginative world of childhood. First published in 1885, the poems capture familiar childhood experiences—play, dreams, gardens, bedtime, changing seasons, distant places and the fascination of seeing the ordinary world transformed through imagination. Written with Stevenson's characteristic simplicity, rhythm and warmth, the collection includes such well-known pieces as "Foreign Lands," "Windy Nights," "The Land of Counterpane," "My Shadow" and "The Swing," and has remained one of the classics of nineteenth-century children's literature.

This 1915 Longmans, Green and Co. edition was specially prepared as a "New Edition for Use in Schools" and forms part of Longmans' Class-Books of English Literature. It includes an introduction by Guy Kendall, M.A., of Charterhouse School, placing Stevenson and his poetry within a broader literary and biographical setting. The volume also retains its tissue-guarded photographic frontispiece portrait of Robert Louis Stevenson, reproduced from a photograph taken at Bournemouth by W. T. Hawke, and Stevenson's touching original dedication to his childhood nurse, Alison Cunningham.

An especially attractive feature of this edition is its surviving original red cloth binding, extensively decorated in black with an Arts and Crafts-influenced design incorporating floral panels, swans and a sailing ship, together with the title and Longmans' series details. Published in London in 1915, the volume represents an appealing early twentieth-century presentation of one of Stevenson's best-loved works, combining literary interest with the charm of period educational publishing and a particularly decorative original binding."
