"A Rare, Substantial and Seldom-offered Continuous Run."

"The Melburnian is the historic journal of the Melbourne Church of England Grammar School—now Melbourne Grammar School —one of Victoria's oldest and most distinguished educational institutions. This exceptional five-volume run collects the school's issues from 1914 through 1923, encompassing the entirety of the First World War and its immediate aftermath. Handsomely preserved in matching presentation leather bindings, each volume bears gilt spine titles, while the front boards display the school crest and its enduring motto, Ora et Labora—"Pray and Work"—in gilt.

Of particular importance is the journal's extensive contemporary record of Old Melburnians serving during the Great War. Published as events unfolded, its pages document enlistments, commissions, promotions, decorations, men wounded or missing, prisoners of war and those killed in action. Honour rolls record recipients of the Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Order, Military Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Military Medal, Croix de Guerre and numerous other British and foreign distinctions. The set includes substantial named casualty lists, culminating in the sobering roll of "Our Honoured Dead," which preserves the names of more than 200 former pupils who lost their lives.

The journals also contain individual biographies, memorial notices and photographic portraits of servicemen, including moving "The School Will Not Forget" memorial galleries. Among the notable accounts is that of Lieutenant William Donovan Joynt, V.C., describing the former pupil's conspicuous bravery during the fighting at Herleville Wood in August 1918. Another illustrated memorial records Captain William Reginald Hoggart, a master and senior officer of the school cadets who enlisted with the 14th Battalion and was killed in action at Gallipoli. Such material provides an unusually intimate record of the war through the lives of a closely connected Melbourne community.

Beyond its military content, The Melburnian chronicles the academic, sporting, religious and social life of Melbourne Grammar during a transformative decade, with school notes, Old Melburnians' news, university results, obituaries, cadet reports, photographs and accounts of clubs, camps and competitions. Together, these five consecutive volumes form an important primary-source archive for researchers of the ANZAC experience, Australian military biography, Melbourne history, genealogy and private-school life. The combination of extensive wartime documentation, named and illustrated biographical material, broad chronological coverage and matching presentation bindings makes this a highly desirable institutional record of considerable historical significance. Each volume bears the gilt initials "T.A.A." to its front board, indicating that this continuous ten-year run was specially bound for a single original owner associated with the school and giving the set an appealing element of private provenance.
