1909 Land Of The Morning by Jessie Mackay Antique NZ Poetry Literature Book

Land Of The Morning
By Jessie Mackay
Published by Whitcombe & Tombs Limited: Christchurch, Melbourne etc 1909 1st Edition (undated however presents truly to the original publication)
With Frontis & Clipping

"Land of the Morning is one of the most attractive early collections by New Zealand poet and journalist Jessie Mackay (1864-1938), a pioneering literary voice whose work blended Scottish romanticism, spirituality and a deep affection for the landscapes and peoples of New Zealand. Published by Whitcombe & Tombs in 1909, the volume gathers together lyrical and reflective poems exploring themes of memory, loss, faith, patriotism and the natural world.

The collection showcases Mackay's gift for musical verse and evocative imagery, ranging from intimate meditations such as A Winter Dedication to more expansive and romantic pieces including Walter the Minstrel and In the Tower. Her poetry often draws upon Celtic traditions and folklore while remaining distinctly rooted in the southern landscapes and cultural identity of New Zealand, making this an important work in the development of early Australasian literature.

An increasingly scarce first edition, this copy is especially appealing for its original decorative cloth binding and retained newspaper clipping (sitting loose) recording Mackay's death in 1938, providing a charming piece of contemporary provenance. The volume also retains the original Dagmar Huie frontispiece, the only illustration apparently issued despite the title page's attribution to the artist, and thus represents a desirable example of one of Mackay's notable early poetic works."

Light wear to covers and spine with light flecking to front cover as shown. Small contemporary prior owner name on front blank endpaper otherwise a very clean and unmarked copy. With the original Dagmar Huie frontispiece present as called for; no further illustrations were issued in this edition despite the title page credit to the illustrator. Pages clean and well presented. An excellent copy in very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
