Tales From Shakespeare
By Mary and Charles Lamb
Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd: London 1901 1st Edition 2 Volume Set

"Tales from Shakespeare, by Mary and Charles Lamb, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd in London in 1901 as a first edition two-volume set, presents elegant prose retellings of Shakespeare's plays designed to make his stories accessible to younger readers and general audiences. Originally crafted in the early nineteenth century, the Lambs' adaptations distil the essence of Shakespeare's comedies and tragedies into clear, graceful English, preserving the dramatic spirit and moral depth of the originals while omitting complex Elizabethan dialogue. The 1901 Raphael Tuck edition is notable for its fine Edwardian presentation—often richly illustrated and attractively bound—reflecting the publisher's reputation for quality gift books.

This two-volume set captures the enduring charm of the Lambs' interpretations, which played a formative role in introducing generations of readers to Shakespeare's characters and themes. The collection balances Mary's sensitive handling of the tragic tales with Charles's lively retellings of the comedies, together creating a timeless bridge between children's literature and classical drama. This 1901 edition holds strong appeal for collectors of Shakespeareana, early educational works, and finely produced turn-of-the-century illustrated editions.

Mary Anne Lamb (1764 - 1847) was an English writer. She is best known for the collaboration with her brother Charles on the collection Tales from Shakespeare (1807). Mary suffered from mental illness, and in 1796, aged 31, she stabbed her mother to death during a mental breakdown. She was confined to mental facilities for most of her remaining life. She and Charles presided over a literary circle in London that included the poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, among others."
