Enfances Célèbres
By Louise Colet
Published by Librairie Hachette: Paris 1896

" This beautifully preserved 1896 Paris edition of Enfances Célèbres by Louise Colet is presented in a superb full red morocco prize binding from the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Melbourne. The binding features elaborate gilt tooling, raised bands, gilt dentelles, and the PLC crest stamped in gilt on the front board. The marbled endpapers are richly coloured, and a printed prize label records the award of First Prize (French) to Miss Kozminsky in December 1897, a lovely piece of local provenance.

Published by Librairie Hachette, this is the Treizième Édition and contains 57 finely executed wood engravings by Foulquier. The text is clean, bright, and complete, with only light toning typical of the period. The illustrations remain crisp and detailed, offering charming depictions of the childhoods of notable historical figures. The book presents exceptionally well, its binding still tight and its pages fresh.

Overall, this is a striking example of a late 19th-century French illustrated work in a premium Australian prize binding. Collectors of presentation bindings, French literature, school ephemera, or Hachette editions will find this an especially desirable volume—both visually impressive and historically meaningful."

Light wear and fading to covers and spine as shown. Carries a prize plate from Presbyterian Ladies' College, Melbourne. Binding is excellent with no loose pages. Pages very clean with no foxing. A stunning copy in very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
